This is a glimpse into the academy and what it takes to become a police officer in the Anchorage Police Department, what it means to serve the Anchorage community, and how these recruits navigate the process.
Academy 25-1
Q: How many recruits?
A: We have 28 APD recruits and one from another partner agency (WPD) for a total of 29 recruits in the 25-1 Police Academy. This is the largest class since 2020.
Q: Why APD?
A: This is an exciting time to join the Anchorage Police Department. APD has historically worked closely with the community it serves and has a proven track record of adapting its strategy to meet the needs of its residents. For example, APD has expanded its Mobile Intervention Team (MIT) to effectively meet the changing needs of the community. The opportunities are endless for those who enjoy making a difference every day.
TRAINING PROGRAM
Q: How long is the basic academy training?
A: The Basic Police Academy Program runs approximately six months and includes both classroom instruction and physical skills training.
Q: What subjects are taught at the academy?
A: Topics include de-escalation, use of force, cultural competency, firearms, crisis intervention, report writing, and emergency vehicle operation.
Q. What happens after graduation?
A: The next phase of their journey involves Field Training (FTO). Once completed, they will officially serve as solo officers, protecting and serving our community with pride.
