Arthur Bean Facing Multiple Charges in Burglary Investigations

At 2:08 PM on February 18, 2024, Anchorage Police responded to a home on the 600-block of Lilas Place.  The resident caller stated a man unknown to him was trying to enter his residence through a window.  The resident stated the male suspect was holding a handgun and had already removed the window’s screen.  Upon arrival officers contacted the male caller at the front door who pointed to the back of the apartment building.  The officers walked to the rear, saw that a window screen was leaned up against the building, but they did not see the suspect.  Shortly thereafter the officers could hear what sounded like a woman screaming nearby; the officers headed in the direction of the screams.

While the first officers were over at Lilas Place, another officer advised over the radio that a male had just broken into a home on the 400-block of Falke Court; the suspect was armed with a hammer.  Officers saw the suspect, later identified as 42-year-old Arthur D. Bean, trying to climb a fence behind the home; two males were hanging on to him.  Officers gave several commands to Bean which went unheeded.  As a result, officers went hands-on with Bean taking Bean to the ground where he was placed into handcuffs.  During the pat search, a handgun was found in Bean’s clothing.

Initial indications are that Bean removed a screen from a window at the rear of the residence on Lilas Place.  Without making entry there, Bean made his way on foot to the residence on Falke Court.  Bean forced his way into the home through an exterior door which he damaged.  He then proceeded to run through the occupied home, while holding a hammer over his head, which put the occupants in fear of immediate physical harm. One of the residents ran out of the home while yelling for help.  Two next-door neighbors came to her aid.  The neighbors got into a physical confrontation with Bean outside in the yard.  During the struggle, Bean hit one of the adult neighbors on the head with the hammer.  The three were still wrestling when officers arrived and detained Bean.

Arthur Bean was remanded at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on the charges of Assault II, five counts of Assault III, Assault IV, Attempted Burglary I, Burglary I, Criminal Mischief IV, and Misconduct Involving a Weapon III – Felon in Possession.

There is no indication that anyone at the Lilas Place home or at the Falke Court residence knew the suspect.  The man Bean struck with the hammer was evaluated by medics but was not transported to the hospital. No one else was injured.

While interacting with Bean, officers made observations of Bean’s behavior that are consistent with a person who is under the influence of drugs.  Drug paraphernalia was found on Bean’s person during the pat search.  During the arrest process, Bean yelled several times that he was in pain.  Medics evaluated Bean and found no injuries.
