Harold Itta Apprehended by K9 Midas After Threatening People with Hatchet

At 4:35 PM on Monday, May 2, 2022, Anchorage Police responded to the 100-block of N. Hoyt Street for a report of a disturbance involving a suspect who was believed to be armed with a hatchet and a knife. The suspect was reportedly threatening people in the home and damaging property.

After the other people in the household safely exited, patrol officers attempted to talk the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Harold J. Itta. Itta barricaded himself into a bedroom where he was believed to still be armed. After investigating, the officers determined they had probable cause to arrest Itta for Assault 3, Criminal Mischief 3, and Resisting Arrest. A trained Crisis Negotiator attempted to convince Itta to peacefully surrender for approximately 90 minutes, however Itta refused and remained barricaded in the bedroom.

A search warrant was obtained to enter the residence, and officers entered the bedroom to contact Itta. Upon making contact, Itta was still armed and refusing to comply. Multiple less lethal and K9 announcements were made, but Itta continued to ignore the commands. A 40mm foam baton and a Taser were used to disarm Itta as K9 Midas was deployed to apprehend him. Itta kicked and swung at K9 Midas, but K9 Midas was still able to apprehend him biting him in the upper and lower body, holding him until he was taken into custody.

Itta was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries from the K9 bite and 40mm foam baton strike.

Itta was remanded at the Anchorage Jail for Assault 3, Criminal Mischief 3, Harming a Police Dog in the 2nd Degree, and Resisting Arrest.

The responding officers and K9 Midas were not injured.
