CURRENT STATUS: Initial Report
ROAD CLOSURE: GAMBELL AND A ST BETWEEN 16TH AVE AND FIREWEED ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED. ALL TRAILS OF CHESTER CREEK ARE CLOSED AS WELL.
UPDATE: On July 18, 2025, at approximately 4:15 p.m., Anchorage Police Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired in the 400 block of East 16th Avenue near Mulcahy Stadium.
Upon arrival, officers quickly and safely evacuated individuals from the nearby baseball field and established a perimeter around A Street and Gambell Street, between East 16th Avenue and Fireweed Lane. APD deployed drones to assist in locating the suspect and monitoring their movements within the perimeter.
Officers used various de-escalation and containment tactics in an effort to apprehend the suspect, who refused to comply with verbal commands. SWAT arrived on scene with the BearCat vehicle to safely move in closer. After multiple announcements were made and the suspect continued to ignore commands, K9 Kevin was deployed and successfully apprehended the suspect with a bite to the leg.
One adult male has been taken into custody. The adult male was transported to a local hospital for treatment of the dog bite injury and will be booked into custody following medical clearance.
No officers or K9 Kevin were injured during the incident. At this time, no charges have been filed, but the adult male was found to have an active warrant out of Kotzebue, Alaska.
All roads in the affected area have since been reopened.
NARRATIVE: There is a large police presence around the 400 block of 16th Ave (Mulcahy Stadium). Please follow the officers’ instructions if you are in the area. If you do not need to be in the vicinity, please avoid it and seek alternative routes until further notice. Depending on the situation, our response may require the use of a variety of tactics and tools, including drones.
We ask the public and the media to avoid posting/publishing photos and/or videos of the scene until the situation is over. Showing tactical positions and movements in these types of situations can put the public and officers’ safety at risk.
