Melecio Taong JR arrested for domestic violence shooting

At 6:41 PM on November 13, 2022, Anchorage Police responded to the 9100-block of Centennial Circle regarding a shooting.  It was reported that the victim was an adult female and the adult male shooter had left the scene.

While some officers went to the shooting scene, others went to the 1800-block of Kodiak Street where the suspect lives.  When officers pulled up near the home, the suspect exited the residence with his hands up; a black handgun was seen in a hip holster.  43-year-old Melecio R. Taong JR complied with commands and was taken into custody.  He was transported to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning by detectives.  Afterwards Taong JR was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on the charges of Assault I and Attempted Murder I.

Initial indications are that both Taong and his ex-girlfriend arrived in a parking lot in separate vehicles. An argument between the two ensued during which time Taong produced a handgun and shot his ex in the upper body.  Immediately after the shooting, Taong verbally threatened others who were nearby before fleeing the scene in his vehicle.  Citizens provided first aid to the victim until Anchorage Police arrived and took over.  Medics responded shortly thereafter and transported the victim to a hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
