OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING 300 BLOCK OF BRAGAW ST

DATE/TIME OF INCIDENT: MAY 12, 2025 AT 11:37 PM
UPDATE 5/16/25: Per policy, the State’s Office of Special Prosecutions (OSP) will review the officers’ use of force and determine whether it was legally justified. Once that has been completed, APD Internal Affairs will review the officers’ actions to confirm whether there was any violation of our policy.
The officer who discharged their weapon has been identified as Officer Carter Mayes (hire date 6/13/19)
UPDATE 5/15/25: On May 12 at approximately 11:37PM, officers conducted a traffic stop on the 300 block of Bragaw St.
Two officers made contact with a driver and a passenger. During the contact, officers observed a gun. One officer was at the vehicle's passenger door and began giving commands to the driver. Shortly after, the officer on the passenger side of the vehicle fired one round, striking the subject. The subject was pronounced deceased on the scene.
Detectives are conducting a thorough investigation. More information will be provided in our second press conference in about a week.
This shooting was captured on body-worn cameras and patrol dash cameras.
The suspect has been identified as 41-year-old Utuva Alaelua. NOK procedures have been completed.
NARRATIVE: Anchorage Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting on the 300 block of Bragaw St.
The Crime Scene Team will respond to process the site; a drone may be utilized. There is currently a large police presence in the area. Please avoid the area if possible to allow officers and investigators to conduct their work safely and efficiently.
