Shelly Mazon Apprehended by K9 Sig in Assault Investigation

On March 14, 2024, at 8:37 PM Anchorage Police received a call regarding a disturbance involving a knife at the 900-block of E. 9th Avenue. APD’s swing-shift patrol and K9 officers were dispatched to the scene. Officers determined 39-year-old Shelly A. M. Mazon had gotten into a verbal altercation with a family member and during the incident, threatened the member with a kitchen knife. Once the victim safely exited the residence, officers and negotiators attempted contact with Mazon, however she barricaded herself in an upstairs room of the residence and refused to speak to officers.

Officers applied for and were granted a search warrant for the residence along with an arrest warrant for Shelly Mazon. A drone was used by officers to clear the inside of the residence and confirmed Mazon was the only person inside. Multiple less-lethal commands and K9 warnings were given to Mazon, however she ignored them and refused to surrender. K9 Sig was released into the residence and located Mazon in the upstairs bedroom. K9 Sig subsequently apprehended the suspect by biting her on the upper part of her arm which allowed officers to take Mazon into custody without further incident.

Mazon was treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained in her apprehension.  Once medically cleared, Shelly Mazon was transported to Hiland Mountain Correctional Center where she was remanded on the charges of Assault III and Resisting Arrest.

Neither the responding officers nor K9 Sig were injured.
