PRESS RELEASE: APD Targets Retail Theft: 60+ Charged, Town Square Park Cameras Activated
Anchorage, AK – November 13, 2025 – The Anchorage Police Department has launched a focused citywide detail to combat organized retail theft, recover stolen property, and reduce related crime across Anchorage. The detail began in businesses across Anchorage in late September and will go through December 31, 2025. Results of the detail so far include:
60+ people charged, several of those are chronic offenders
Recovery of stolen property resulting in total loss recovery of at least $58,000 so far
“These numbers will go up as the detail continues. APD is focused on retail theft because it is often at the heart of broader criminal activity. Stopping theft at its source plays a key role in reducing crime throughout the community,” said Chief Sean Case.
The focused detail on retail theft will continue in full force through the holidays and into the New Year. Additionally, APD will increase patrol around businesses and malls through the holiday season to help support local businesses.
“Partnering with businesses to help them take control of crime in their stores is a key part of this detail. APD is here to support businesses with that process.”
This targeted campaign is part of the department’s wider, technology-driven crime reduction strategy supported by the recent renewal of the Axon technology contract. This includes new tools such as specialized software to connect businesses and law enforcement, allowing officers to share intelligence, identify repeat offenders, and respond proactively.
As these technologies come online, the department continues to expand its network of safety tools across public spaces. As of Friday, November 7, live video feeds from Town Square Park can be seen at the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC). During the initial rollout, the cameras will help document incidents and support investigations. APD plans to expand the RTCC in early 2026.
“From day one, public safety has been my top priority. Safety is the foundation of a thriving community,” said Mayor Suzanne LaFrance. “This is about protecting our local businesses, supporting the livelihoods of our neighbors, and keeping our community safe and welcoming for everyone. We are giving the Anchorage Police Department the tools they need—including new technology—to make it clear that criminal activity has no place in our community.”
