Office of Special Prosecutions Completes Review of Officer-Involved Shooting in Anchorage
Sept. 8, 2026 (Anchorage, AK) –The Office of Special Prosecutions completed its review of an officer involved shooting that occurred on May 19, 2026, involving Emil McCord and Anchorage Police Department Officers Jacob Jones, Justin Miller, and Alexander Roman.
The review determined that Officer Jones, Officer Miller, and Officer Roman were each legally justified in the use of deadly force against McCord. The incident occurred after the officers responded to a 911 call reporting a man was firing gunshots into the air at the intersection of Bragaw Street and Reka Drive. When the officers arrived, McCord began walking towards them while holding a handgun. McCord was ordered to drop the gun multiple times, but did not comply with the officers’ commands. McCord then pointed the firearm at the officers, at which point each officer fired his weapon at McCord. McCord was struck multiple times and died from the gunshot wounds.

The deceased adult male is identified as 33-year-old Emil McCord. Next-of-kin notification procedures are complete.

UPDATE at 9:45 a.m. on May 19, 2026:
On May 19 at about 12:03 a.m., APD Patrol Officers responded to the area of Bragaw St. and Reka Dr. for reports of an adult male firing rounds in the air from a handgun. Upon arrival, the officers located and observed the subject was armed. The subject did not follow commands given by officers. Three APD officers fired their weapons. The subject was struck. Officers immediately began life saving measures. The subject was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. No APD Officers were injured in the incident.
Per policy the state’s Office of Special Prosecutions (OSP) will review the officers’ use of force and determine whether it was justified. Once that has been completed, APD Internal Affairs will review the officers’ actions to confirm whether there was any violation of policy.
As per APD practice, the officers will be placed on four days of administrative leave. Their names will be released publicly 72 hours after the incident. Once OSP has completed their investigation, their findings will be available for the public to review.
